I am a consultant on health and development issues in Cambodia, advising various agencies including the government. Since 2004, I am working with a cambodian NGO (see ) on chronic patient empowerment issues, and since mid 2005 to train Cambodians with Diabetes to become Peer-Educators, who screen their own urban slum communities to find other diabetics, and show the new patients how to self manage their chronic disease, including hypertension, and follow them up. The Peer Educator network can also be mobilized for Primary Prevention activities. To me the use of peer educators in the battle against the wave of chronic disease is a very interesting strategic option that needs to be carefully explored and studied and possibly recommended to be replicated nationwide in Low Income Countries as a cost effective strategy.
