GASMS-Dorairaj Prabhakaran


Dr. D. Prabhakaran is Additional Professor in the Department of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the premier institute of India. He graduated from Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore and then moved to AIIMS, Delhi, where he received his MD (Medicine) and DM (Cardiology) degrees. He has done MSc in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University, Canada and has a career commitment to preventive cardiology. Dr. Prabhakaran has been involved in several major international and national research studies including the INTERHEART Study, the CREATE Trial, Indian Council of Medical Research commissioned national case-control on Acute myocardial infarction, British Heart Foundation, funded projects on low birth weight and migrant Gujaratis, Wellcome trust funded impact of intracountry migration on CHD, the NIH sponsored STICH trial and the India Health Study. In addition he is involved in many community based prevention programmes. He is Member of various national and international organizations like Scientific Council of the Section on Epidemiology and Prevention of the World Heart Federation, Cardiological Society of India, Association of Physicians of India, , Indian Council of Medical Research’s Project Review Committee on Cardiology and Indian Council of Medical Research’s Advisory Committee on Hypertension. Dr. Prabhakaran was also co-regional co-ordinator for the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation: Guidelines Committee on Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases in South Asians. He has organized several research proposal development workshops and workshops for establishing research networks for IC Health, Department of Biotechnology –India, Indian Council of Medical Research and Government of India. He is the associate editor of the Indian Edition of the journal “Hypertension” and a member of the editorial board of the international journal ‘open medicine’. He is also referee for scientific paper assessments for National Medical Journal of India, Indian Heart Journal, Journal of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian journal of Medical Research, Hypertension and International Journal of Cardiology. He has more than 150 publications in both national and international journals with an average impact factor of 5.
